News > Cooking is Fun!
Two of our team at Hogan Lovells are giving back to the community in which they work and helping young disadvantaged children and teenagers find their passion for food through a series of cookery classes.
With Hogan Lovells’ support of St Luke’s Community Centre, which is close to the City of London, through a volunteers scheme, it made sense for the team to see how they could add value by offering their time and expertise too.
Every term, Senior Hospitality Manager, Alain Mara and Executive Chef, Gareth Ruck, run a two-hour cookery class inviting young people and their parents to learn how to create a variety of dishes and then enjoy what they have created. Using products that have been donated to the centre, Alain and Gareth undertake a ‘Ready, Steady, Cook’ approach using whatever ingredients they can find. The youngsters, along with their parents, then assist the chefs in preparing and cooking the dishes.
“Gareth and I believe that every child should be taught to cook at school, let alone at home,” says Alain. “Good food can be made in 15 minutes. We’re cooking with them in the hope that they will pass their learnings on to the next generation, and so on. Even though we may never know how much our efforts have made a difference, their smiles, thanks and empty plates are worth every minute of our given time. So much so, more and more of the team are volunteering their services too!”
In addition to volunteering their time in this way, the team also donates any unused fruit and bagged sandwiches to the centre.
